Every year hundreds of premature and/or sick newborns are admitted to the John Hunter Hospital's (JHH) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Along with medical issues their newborn(s) may be facing, often another challenge for a new mum is trying to learn the art of feeding her child. For those breast feeding, it can be quite a rigorous schedule of expressing and pumping to generate and produce milk for their child. Personally, it was more demanding than usual with 3 mouths to feed - yes, triplets! Access to a loan hospital grade breast pump from the NICU meant we had more time once home with our bubs, to work out our feeding plan and the equipment required (which can differ for pregnancies). With so much to consider already, it was great to have one less thing to worry about in the beginning.
The JHH NICU is a very busy place year round; often there aren't enough pumps to loan out to NICU mums who already have enough on their plate. We were lucky and very thankful.
Each pump costs around $3000. Every donation no matter the size, can help towards the purchase of at least one pump that a NICU mum could access.
With your help, maybe we can make it one less stress for a family in an already stressful situation.
